ISAAC BROCK SITE

History

After 10 years of planning, the expansion of Valour Community Centre-Isaac Brock Site finally came to completion in June 2009.

The history of the Valour Community Centre project revolves around two separate projects. Valour is the result of the amalgamation of three separate centres in the West End: Clifton, Orioles and Isaac Brock. The three boards agreed to amalgamate to provide more efficient programming, manpower and finances. Having one Board of Directors and one General Manager for the three sites has proven to be a very positive move for the community.

The second project (independant of the amalgamation), started when the Isaac Brock site was identified through the Building Community Initiative as the location for a new gymnasium. The project saw the renovation of the old auditorium into a regulation size gymnasium, able to accommodate basketball, volleyball and many other gym-related activities. Renovations were continued throughout the main floor, the basement, and continued on to the outside of the building to give a fresh, new appearance. A new parking lot was added to the north side of the property, to accommodate 40 cars.

The total cost of the project was $2.18 million, with funding of $1.2 million from the Community Centre Investment Fund, $630,000 from the Building Communities Initiative, and $350,000 from the the City of Winnipeg Land Dedication Reserve and Community Incentive Grant Program. Valour CC wishes to thank Councillor Harvey Smith, GCWCC, and the City of Winnipeg for their unwavering support throughout the amalgamation and the expansion process.
