Orioles Bike Cage

Orioles Bike Cage

Orioles Bike Cage is a volunteer-run community bike shop and a program of the Valour Community Center. It is located in the shack behind the wading pool at the Orioles Site of the Valour Community Center, 444 Burnell St. We teach people how to fix their bicycles. We provide knowledgeable mechanics to guide you through repairs, new and used replacement parts, and all the right tools. We create a relaxed, supportive, and inclusive community atmosphere for learning new things.

We’re here to help you stay on your bike as best we can, but there are some problems we can’t deal with and may recommend you purchase a part from a store or visit another location.

Hours of Operation

Currently, we’re closed due to health restrictions and our inability to serve people while keeping them and our volunteers safe.

  • Open Shop is Tuesdays 6:00 – 8:30pm.

Open Shop means everyone is welcome. Bring your bike or your questions. Come for the help, stay for the knowledge.

Our Services

The Bike Cage has a wide range of tools and parts. We’re experts at many different repairs related to your bicycle.

      • Common issues: include brakes not working properly, gears making funny noises and not changing, flat tires, wobbly wheels, or broken parts.

    • Uncommon issues: loose hubs, bottom brackets, or headsets, re-wrapping bar tape, replacing wheel spokes, minor frame bending, etc.

We can assist with rack and basket installation, or the installation of any other part you have purchased for your bike, like a new seat, a fender, or a new drive train. We can consult you on what kind of bicycle to buy, what size you may need, getting the right parts, or decorating your bike.

***We have limited capacity to work on BMX bikes as their mechanics are often non-compatible. We do not do electrical work for electric bikes, nor work with fuel engines installed on bikes.

How to Donate

Our services are by donation, sliding scale down to zero. We do not charge because we believe money should never be a barrier to maintaining transportation necessities, but please consider donating to our shop. We do not accept trades or exchanges.

At this time, we only accept monetary donations in cash or cheque. In-kind donations of bikes, bike parts and related accessories can be dropped off during Open Shop hours.

Our services are ‘by donation’, not free, meaning that we expect people to donate to our shop in exchange for our parts and service. It also means that you decide what to pay.

It’s a sliding scale down to zero, meaning that people with greater financial capacity should consider donating more. It also means you can choose to pay nothing if you do not have the means to do so. We will still help you 🙂

How to Volunteer

You don’t have to be a bike mechanic to help us! We have a great variety of roles for people to fill. We recommend coming to a volunteer orientation, monthly. E-mail to find out the date and time of the next one.

 Example roles

    • Greeter

    • Shop Hand

    • Social Media Administrator

    • Scrap Hauler

      • Promoter and poster

    • Event Assistant

Helpful tasks around the shop are cleaning and tidying, sweeping and vacuuming, sorting and organizing our parts, finding holes in tubes and patching them, creating signage and painting. We also hold work parties while we’re in the process of renovating. Maybe you can

Supporters

Orioles Bike Cage is happy to have the support of the Daniel McIntyre St. Matthews Community Association this year, and for the last 10 years. We have regularly been the recipient of the DMSMCA Small Grants program. It has greatly increased the Bike Cage’s ability to sustain, grow, and meet the needs of the community, and to bolster our resilience in tough times. With their money we have renovated, restocked, offered honorariums to volunteers, and shored up our security measures to deter theft. Thank you DMSMCA!

Our Sale Items

Orioles Bike Cage sells U-locks, tires, tubes, bike accessories like bells, and more. Inquire with us as to our current stock.

Orioles Bike Cage is Closed

** Due to the break-in in July, Orioles Bike Cage is closed until further notice. We cannot accept donations of bicycles at this time, but monetary donations can be made through the Valour Community Center. We apologize for any inconvenience. **
